Food lovers, beware! (Gozo Edition)

I love food. I’m not very good at cooking, but still I love to eat.

If someone cooks for me I’m more than happy. I enjoy every kind of meat. And pasta. I’ve always been a huge pizza lover. There were even times when I would happily eat pizza every other day! Homemade, fireoven, thin crust, deep pan, even frozen! I mean.. after baking it myself, of course. I’ve had quite a few passionate discussions on that topic with my Italian friends, sometimes very loud and once I came to Malta, I’ve decided I should make a research on how much the Italian tradition sank into the island. After all, the countries are almost neighbors, right?

I’m gonna be adding new restaurants on the go. I’m only talking about the particular food mentioned below each restaurant and my overall experience, the places might rock or suck at other meals, I just have no idea.

So, here we go!

Il Wileg, Qala

★★★★★

Ravioli. Probably the most cozy restaurant on the island, especially it’s inner terrace. You are going to feel like at home from the very first moment. The staff makes the experience even better. Don’t be afraid to ask for an advice, they know their stuff and will be more than happy to help. Although they don’t serve pizza, I’m sure you will be able to pick something from their menu! Traditional local cuisine is a way to go. I would especially recommend the Ravioli, either fried or cooked, you won’t regret;) It’s also possible to stay there for a night (or more), the farmhouse is nice and quiet and also has a swimming pool, surrounded by trees, bushes and flowers. Very beautiful place to choose for your holiday.

Xerri I-Bukkett, Qala

Steak. THE Steak. Really, I have never seen such a big piece of meet on my plate in a restaurant before. Ever. And mouthwatering just by it’s appearance! I asked for medium/rare and it was slightly overdone, yet if anyone tried to take the plate away I would have probably bitten them 😀 Truly great food, I’ve also had the chance to taste spare ribs and no complaints there either. Good selection of wine, breathtaking view (again, on the channel and all three islands). The food took a bit longer to prepare and our waiter struggled a bit while opening the bottle, but he was apparently new and very polite. Recommended.

D’Bar Cafe Restaurant, Qala

Pizza. I had one with anchovies and potatoes and it was remarkably different to what do I usually get, yet I was very happy with it. We took the food away but from what have I seen it would have been pleasant to enjoy it there. I haven’t managed to eat the whole lot and the next day I couldn’t resist but to finish it off – and believe it or not it was still pretty decent. Even cold. Yeah, I was hungry 😀

Edit: Another pizza. This time we stayed in, during the summer there are two options. Terrace (facing rather busy street and a local church, downstairs or upstairs. We went upstairs. AC running which was nice since the evening was very hot, but on the other side the place was somehow very noisy, not really suitable for a first date, let’s say. As for the food – I have noticed just now it’s a deep pan pizza. Gorgonzola cheese and ham. The same story, ate the second half the next morning and it was still tasty.

Fliegu Restaurant, Nadur

★★★★★

Pizza. Ohhh my god!!! I’m drooling just on the thought of that delicious piece of art. Fresh ingredients, slightly crispy dough, right amount of everything. Seriously, this is one of the best pizzas I have ever tasted, plus it’s affordable and the view (especially after the sunset) is simply breathtaking. You can see the channel between all three islands and if you are lucky, the moon will just hang above them like a luxurious chandellier. The tables are a bit too big if you are heading for a chilled meal with your partner, but still it’s managable. Also, the pizza chef is apparently Italian. (Yeah Luca, I know, you told me:D)

Mojo’s, Victoria

★★★⋆

Fritta. This was the very first food I have tasted upon my arrival to the island of Gozo for the first time. I was sick and I felt horribad, yet I enjoyed the meal. It was tasty, good value and professionally arranged on the plate. A also had some kind of a strawberry smoothie with it, which I loved. I’m coming back, Mojo’s!

Mo’s Diner, Victoria

★★★

Salmon baguette. Although I only had a snack there, I’m definitely going back for more. If you sit outside, there is like a patio with various styles of tables and chairs, it felt like I was on a picnic with friends although I in fact only knew and interacted with one person. The surrounding street is busy, but was not bothering me at all. Prompt service. The baguette was delicious, made from very fresh ingredients and refreshing.

Sizzlers, Victoria

★★

Pasta. Seafood pasta, not bad but I would describe it as quantity over quality. I haven’t tasted the pizza by myself, but fellow pizza lover told me it was probably the worst pizza he has ever tasted. The place itself has no atmosphere. So, up to you, if you are brave enough and have a different experience, I would be happy to hear it!

The Captains Table, Xlendi Bay

★★⋆

Pizza. This place has a great atmosphere and is in total very cozy. Also, the staff is friendly and service is great. But as for the pizza itself.. not impressed. The dough was not overdone, yet kinda dry and in overall it was kinda heavy.

The Boat House, Xlendi Bay

★★⋆

Pizza. Although many people like the place, I cannot say I would be excited to go there again. They were not busy when we came there, yet everything took quite a while to get moving. Pizza was not bad, but kinda boring. Yet I have to say, I’ve heard they are pretty good with seafood. Also the view is very nice, you can see the harbour just a few steps away.

Il Capitano, Marsalforn

★★★★

Pizza. Very good pizza I have to say. My second choice after Fliegu. Not exactly thin crust but indeed tasty. Wouldn’t mind going there regularly. Also, the staff was very helpful and cheerful, I enjoyed the navy surroundings and in general we had a very nice evening there with my friends. I was a little surprised it was not possible to only order a glass of wine, but that might be a cultural difference, I haven’t tried doing that anywhere else on the island. In the end, our waitress poured me a good glass of wine “to taste it” and we ended up ordering the whole bottle anyway.

That’s how they lure customers in. Successfully.

Ta Tona, Mgarr

★★★★

Pasta. In fact, it was chicken, peppers and mushroom gnocchi in a creamy sauce and it was yummy! Huge portion accompanied with a little bowl of parmasan cheese. The staff made us feel very welcome, tables are great for having a romantic dinner for two. Delightful experience. Will be happy to come back. And it’s just a few steps from the harbor!
